Self Help
The self-improvement industry generates around $10 billion per year in the United States. Some people may ask themselves the question, “Why is the self help industry so popular?” The reason self-help products appeal to people is because they offer the hope of happiness. People with financial, marital, parenting or other problems may feel desperate to find a solution that will improve their situation. They may feel overwhelmed or depressed by their circumstances. Self-help products offer hope to individuals who are searching for answers. Self-help courses and seminars appeal to both men and women who want to have higher self-esteem, more money, a better marriage or a happier life in general.
Each year people purchase millions of self-help books. Women are more likely to read self-help books, likely because females tend to seek external support when they are experiencing problems. For example, women in a rocky marriage are more likely to purchase a self-help book that offers marital solutions in the hope that she will receive good advice. Books such as these also comfort women who are feeling confused or lonely. Women purchase self-help books because they want to feel better. Many women tend to blame themselves for their problems and feel that if they learn how to change their behavior their problem will disappear and they will be happier. Book publishers are well aware that women are willing to purchase self-help books that make them feel better about themselves.
The majority of men try to solve their problems on their own, which makes them less likely to purchase books that offer advice. Many authors of terrific self-help books for men have had trouble publishing their books because publishers consider self-improvement books for women to be more profitable. Although modern day men are becoming more aware of themselves, many of them are not ready to delve into the world of self-help books.
People spend money on self-improvement products for the same reason they purchase lottery tickets. Men and women want to improve their life so they can be happy. Self-improvement courses, seminars and books offer valuable advice and most importantly they offer people hope of achieving peace and happiness.
